Island by island

Azores hiking is never just one kind of walk

On São Miguel, trails climb through pasture and cryptomeria forest to crater lakes. On Pico, the climb starts at the Mountain House at 1,230 metres and ends on a 2,351-metre summit. Terceira’s north coast drops to sea cliffs and natural pools, while São Jorge and Flores reveal fajãs, the flat strips of land that sit at sea level below towering cliffs.

A guided hiking tour takes care of what makes island walking tricky for visitors: reaching the start of a linear trail and getting back, reading a mountain forecast, and knowing when a slippery descent or a closed path calls for another plan. Many of the tours below also include pickup, walking poles and a picnic.

Still choosing where to walk? Our trip planning guide helps you pick an island and a season, and our guide to the best hikes in the Azores compares standout trails.

What to check before your Azores hike

Pickup or a meeting point

Most São Miguel and Terceira hikes collect you in town or from your accommodation. Pico climbs meet at the Mountain House high on the mountain, and the Horta walk starts beside the marina.

Fitness and age limits

Pico climbs are for fit hikers aged 12 or over, with an upper limit of 60 or 70 depending on the operator. The Sete Cidades and Lagoa do Fogo days ask for reasonable fitness, while the sunset walk is rated easy to medium.

Weather and plan changes

Guides may reorder a day or switch trails when rain, mud or tides make a route unsafe. The Hominis natura Pico climb depends on the weather and can be called off just before the start.

What to bring

Hiking shoes with good grip matter everywhere, and Pico’s nature reserve refuses entry in unsuitable footwear. Pack a waterproof layer, sun protection, water, and swimwear for days that end at pools or hot springs.

Food on the trail

Picnic lunches are included on the Sete Cidades, Lagoa do Fogo and Baías da Agualva tours. Go Climb Pico does not include meals, so carry your own food for the mountain.

Traveller experiences

What hikers say about walking in the Azores

Hikers praise guides who adapt the day to the weather and keep a comfortable pace, and they are candid about the practical side: the Sete Cidades ridge turns cold and windy after sunset, a hot-spring visit depends on the tide, and one guest wished for more stories about Azorean culture along the way.

“Day trip was great. Tiago did a great job accommodating our activity for the weather. Beautiful views along a 2 hour hike around the green lake. Lunch was filling. Drive to the hot springs was enjoyable. The actual hot springs were incredible to see, although we go there during high tide when it mixed in with the ocean. Would strongly recommend this experience!”

Diana · United StatesMay 4, 2023 · Sete Cidades and Crater Lakes Hike

“We had a really nice day with Steffi and Nilton! They gave good explanations about the climb. The pace of our group was just right; we were able to walk along nicely. The guides keep a close eye on you and adjust the pace where necessary. The guides also share a lot of information about the flora and fauna and gave a lot of explanations about the island. We were very happy that we booked a tour to climb Pico Mountain instead of doing it independently. I can recommend this day trip to everyone! Really the highlight of our stay on Pico.”

Rianne · NetherlandsAugust 24, 2026 · Pico Mountain Climb: Your Path to Portugal’s Highest Point

“We really enjoyed our day with Pedro, who was an excellent guide. Great trip which combined three different aspects of the island: the amazing coastal views, a small forest park for the picnic and an afternoon swim. We had plenty of time to enjoy each part without any rush”

Helen · United KingdomAugust 28, 2025 · Terceira: Baías da Agualva Hike, Picnic and Biscoitos Pools

“Hiking the Sete Cidades ridge at sunset was magical. Sofia was incredibly kind and knowledgeable, making the experience even better. We even crossed paths with some local Azorean cows along the way! Finishing the evening with local wine and cheese as the sun dipped into the ocean was perfect. Tip: Bring a jacket and good hiking shoes, as the terrain can be uneven and the ridge gets windy and chilly after sunset!”

Kathryn · United StatesJuly 9, 2026 · Sete Cidades Sunset Hike with Wine and Cheese

“I had a wonderful day on this hike, walking through a beautiful forest to reach the lookout for Fogo Lake. Following th hike, we stopped off at the local beach for a swim and a drink. The tour was really well organised and communication was fantastic from joining arrangements to the attentiveness of the guide. The lunch was much larger than I expected and very filling. I'd highly recommend this tour to anyone of average to good fitness. I really enjoyed this trip.”

Neil · United KingdomJune 14, 2023 · São Miguel and Lagoa do Fogo Hiking Trip

“It was good, Rodriguo was very nice (as well as his French intern) on the other hand I would have liked more generic explanations on Portugal / the Azores, traditional music in the vehicle for example. All in all we enjoyed our tour!”

Questions

Azores hiking tour questions

What are the best hiking tours in the Azores?

It depends on the day you want. The Sete Cidades and Crater Lakes Hike carries GetYourGuide’s Top pick badge and packs São Miguel’s best-known crater scenery into one moderate day. For a real challenge, both guided Mount Pico climbs are rated 4.9 and take you to Portugal’s highest point.

Compare the two Pico climbs

Are Azores hiking tours suitable for seniors?

Many are, but check each tour’s limits. The Pico climbs are not suitable for people over 70 or over 60, depending on the operator, and several São Miguel hikes exclude people with heart problems or mobility impairments. The Sete Cidades sunset walk is rated easy to medium over 4.4 km, which makes it one of the gentler options.

Read our fitness advice for Azores hikes

Do I need a guide to hike in the Azores?

No. The islands have more than 60 marked trails that you can walk on your own, and Pico can be climbed independently after registering at the Mountain House. A guide becomes worthwhile when a trail is linear and you have no car, when the weather is uncertain, or when you want local knowledge of the landscape.

Weigh up guided and self-guided hiking

How much does a guided hike in the Azores cost?

Among the tours featured here, prices start at €43 per person for the two-hour Horta walk on Faial and reach €240 per person for the São Jorge overnight camping hike. Full-day São Miguel hikes with lunch start at €65, and the guided Pico climbs cost €90 or €129.

Which Azores island is best for hiking?

São Miguel has the widest choice of guided hikes, with crater lakes, forest trails and waterfalls. Pico is the island for a summit climb, while São Jorge and Flores are known for dramatic coastal paths down to the fajãs.

See the best hikes on each island

Is hotel pickup included on Azores hiking tours?

Often, but not always. Most São Miguel hikes include pickup in Ponta Delgada or from your accommodation, and the Baías da Agualva tour includes pickup in central Angra do Heroísmo. Pico climbs meet at the Mountain House rather than at your hotel.
